|RBI likely to announce Urjit Patel as Deputy Gov.|
Mr. Patel's appointment could be announced over the next one or two days, the official told The Wall Street Journal.
Mr. Patel is currently a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, a U.S.-based think tank, and an adviser to the Boston Consulting Group.
Mr. Patel couldn't be immediately reached for comment. A Reserve Bank of India spokeswoman declined comment.
The RBI has four deputy-governor posts. One of the positions fell vacant when the three-year term of Subir Gokarn, who was in charge of the monetary-policy department, expired on Dec. 31 after a one-month extension.
In a press release late Tuesday, the RBI said Mr. Gokarn's responsibilities have been distributed among Governor Duvvuri Subbarao and the other three deputy governors "till further orders."
